Very practical

This is a great little book. It explains how things work, how to get the most out of your car, and how to make minor repairs. If you don't know anything about cars, the language is still comprehensible. It will tell you the basics of how each system works. On the other hand, if you know a lot about cars, it provides enough detail to be a useful reference. There are step-by-step procedures on the simple maintenance and repair which can be performed using minimal tools. ie: tune-up, battery, and oil change. This book would be helpful for anybody who owns a car. The more you know about your car, the more you get out of it, and the less you get screwed over by mechanics. Use this book regularly, and your car will last longer. Taking care of your car is less about pride and more about saving thousands of dollars in the long run.Don't buy this book to do major repairs on your car. (For that, Haynes manuals for the model you drive are the best.) It is intended to help the average driver better understand how cars work, and how to fix simple problems without going to a mechanic. When you do take your car to the mechanic, read this book first to understand the work he's going to do and avoid getting overcharged. Bottom line: Five bucks on this book is a bargain, considering all the money and aggravation you'll save. It would make a good practical gift for anybody.

Give this to anyone with a long commute

This is a great book to help diagnose minor or major auto problems as they are happening. Is that knock or rattle the signal of a major problem and you should pull over and call a tow truck or is it no big deal? This book will tell you. It gives you simple quick fixes to get you on your way if possible and can save you many dollars in repair bills. It is well worth the price.

Good for the inexperienced

Easy to read. It is a convenient book for people who are not expert at cars mechanics like you and me. Of course, it won't explain you how to build from scratch the new Saturn model but it is not the aim, so that's not a problem. I believe this book is a very good starting point to take care of your car and help you with your most common car's problems. It gives you the basics of breakdown's diagnosis, and even though it is not the best reference for your specific model of vehicle it provides a good overview of what's happening under the hood. It's not a book for professionals. But for the others, it is really interesting. It is not expensive and the explanations are OK. I was just a little desappointed by the pictures, which are not impressive, but overall it is really a bargain. You can buy it, it is worth the price!
