Book Overview

Meet Katy Duck, a sometimes shy, sometimes brave, not-so-ordinary duck, whose determination and can-do spirit always seems to wing doubts in the opposite direction. Toddlers will relate to Katy's befuddlements, mishaps, and triumphs as she learns to make new friends, stand on her own two feet, and try new things--all of which can be daunting and exhilirating for this age group.

Cute on the surface plus deeper meaning if you want it

On the surface, this is a cute little book and perfect for any little girl who hankers after dress up, and looking "fancy" any chance she gets. My little 2-year old trails a boa most of the day just for fun! Putting on airs is great for little kids, and the mishaps due to trailing a boa around town, and particularly to dance class are endearing in and of themselves. But there's also great fodder for discussion here if you choose to take it. On a simple note, there's useful discussion on whether dress up is appropriate everywhere. Especially handy for the little girls who want to be a princess or a fairy everywhere they go! But on a deeper level, with an older child, there's the level of what it means to be a *star.* And whether who you are and what you project and what you think of yourself is really something you put on externally, or whether the power to be a star is inside you no matter what you wear. The (male) dance teacher is lovely and understanding about her tripping up her fellow students and why the boa is important to her. And he does a nice job just starting down the path to the deeper meaning in case you want to go there, but not in some heavy-handed moralistic way in case you just want the cute little story. Very cute little story. I definitely want to check out the others in this series.

A TWINKLE TOES SHE'S NOT !

Love these sturdy board books that can be reread over and over again without small fingers inadvertently tearing pages. They can be passed from one child to the next and compared to some children's book are virtually indestructible. So, Katy Duck books will be around for quite a while. The latest, Katy Duck Dance Star, shows an excited Katy receiving a boa from Aunt Ella. It's absolutely gorgeous with every color of the rainbow and Katy can't wait to put it on. Lessons are learned when she doesn't want to take it off but wants to wear it to dance class saying, "This is what all the dance stars wear." Just imagine the chaos a long fluffy boa might create in a class of young duck dancers! Youngsters will not only smile at the upsets but also learn lessons in consideration for others and apologizing when it is called for. - Gail Cooke
