A Timeless Treasure

One of the greatest and fondest memories of my childhood is the excitement of finding a perfect book and getting lost within it's pages. Such books for me were The Boxcar Children series by Gertrude Chandler and the Trixie Belden series by Julie Cambell. I cannot tell you the countless afternoons spent re-inacting The Boxcar Children books outside in our garage and yard. To me, a book that not only allows a child to become engrossed within it, but also brings stories to life so strongly that they bring a child's imagination to life, outside of the pages, is utterly priceless. I found Katie & Kimble to be such a story. Ok, so I won't be running outside (or inside, for that matter) re-inacting the story or bringing other stories to life with the characters, but I had the same wonderous feeling come over me, as I read Katie & Kimble. It truly took me back to my childhood and, for just a bit, I felt that childhood/perfect book connection once again. It was, quite frankly, a magical feeling. Not only did I adore reading Katie & Kimble, but the several parts that I read out loud to my 6 year old daughter, thrilled her. I will be going back and rereading the entire book with her and eagerly awaiting the second in the series. Katie is a young girl of nine, who has moved into a new house, along with her Mom, Dad, and baby brother. Little does she know that, within the house, another young girl, of ten, also lives - though she is a ghost. Kimble died many years ago, at the young age of ten, from a terrible flu outbreak. She is lonely, sad, and desperately wants to find out what happened to her Mother. From the very first giggle that Katie hears, the girls immediately become the best of friends, forming a deep friendship that transends all boundaries (alive vs. pasted on). Katie & Kimble is a true treasure with it's sweet simplicity and richly engrossing tale. Ms. Thieman has an excellent talent for bringing her characters to life and allowing the reader to be quickly absorbed within the settings and dialog. I can easily see this series becoming a childhood favorite to last through the years! I simply cannot wait to read the next in this series: Katie & Kimble, The Magic Wish!

Ghostly Fun

This review was done by my 8 year old daughter who loved the book! Katie & Kimble is a very honest book with a lot of friendship and truth. I thought it was a really great book, one of my top favorites. It was a very sweet, loving book. There are some parts that I wasn't expecting, but I liked the whole thing. I think it would be cool to meet a ghost like Kimble and to live in that type of house. Katie didn't really have any friends and I think Kimble made a smart choice of showing her feelings so Katie would like her. I wish that I had a friend like Katie or Kimble or even both. I think Katie & Kimble is a book I would enjoy reading again and I look forward to reading more about Katie and Kimble's adventures. I also liked the pictures in the book. I think Mrs. Russell made a smart choice about trusting that Kimble was real and I was surprised that she believed in the end.

Ghostly laughter

Reviewed by Madeline McElroy (age 7.5) for Reader Views (11/08) This is a ghost story of a girl named Katie who is nine and the other girl that you see on the front cover is a girl named Kimble who is ten. The two girls met when Katie heard a girl laughing at her new house but she didn't see anyone. She kept hearing laughter and then she saw a girl ghost on her bed. Katie wasn't afraid of Kimble. And Kimble was excited to see a new friend in her house. I like the whole story of it and I want the other book of Katie & Kimble. I like Kimble because she is a ghost, and I like ghosts, they don't scare me either. My most favorite character is Katie. I also like Kimble's pretty purple dress. I like the parts when Katie and Kimble hug each other because they are such good friends. The girls like to play outside exploring and going on adventures. Another funny part of the story is when Katie and the rest of her family in the house were in sleeping bags, everyone but Twinkle, the family dog. I would like the book a little bit better if it had a tiny bit of action. I still like the pictures even if they don't have color. Lots of chapter books don't have pictures, but I wish they would, it makes it more interesting to me. This is an easy book to read for seven-year-olds. I think a lot of kids in the world that know how to read would like "Katie & Kimble: A Ghost Story" by Linda Thieman.
