My daughter Callie will be heading off to a Dude Ranch with her grandparents next summer. She loves horses and is very good both on and with them despite her age -- 5 years old. I borrowed this book from the library to help her get in the mood after her grandmother told her about the trip. It was her first "chapter book." We read at least two chapters each night. She would beg me to keep going even when her eyes were swollen with fatigue. Her breakfast banter with her father each morning was filled with information she learned from reading the book. While she may be disappointed if her dude ranch experience doesn't exactly match the Arrow-A, she has a real understanding of what to expect at a Dude Ranch now that she's read Karen's Cowboy. She learned a number of other lessons as well and gained some insight into the lives of kids' whose parents are divorced. I would definitely recommend this book -- and more importantly, so would she. She told me she was going to ask for this book for Christmas so she could keep it forever and read it to her little girl someday.
Best Book Ever!

I think this book is very good. Andrew, Karen's brother is as timid as a mouse. As soon as he heard a wolf howl, He will hide behind something. I think he is really funny. Karen and her little house family is way out west at a dude ranch run by a real cowboy! But then Karen found that her cowboy friend, Jonathan Wayne ( whose short name is Jon ), has a big problem with his ranch. Then Karen decided that she and her friend that she made at the ranch, Jenny should help him.And their plan works! But when they all have to saddle uo and head for home, she and Andrew missed Jon.
