Kaplan GRE book

This is essential for anyone who feels unprepared for the GRE. The CD tests are the most helpful, but the excercises in the book are also a good way to get a feel for the actual test.

GREAT Resource

I found this to be a terrific resource. I scored abysmally low on the diagnostic test and was therefore insanely motivated to study. The book is helpful to carry around and practice with. I could study at the pool and I could study while my children took ice skating lessons - more convenient than carting around the laptop. I found the book's explanations to be better in some areas than the computer's and vice versa. I'm glad I did both. The games were stupid and didn't help at all. The flash cards were extremely useful. I had only about 4 weeks to prepare so I spent at least two hours (sometimes more) every day studying - either with the book or with the CD-ROM. I even took several of the math tests a couple of times - just choose to wipe out your earlier score. The strategies REALLY helped. I found myself doing the math problems the "hard way" and the Kaplan method really helped me recognize which tricks to use to make things easier. The Analytical Writing preparation also helped enormously. The 5-step approach gave me a way to organize my thoughts in a systematic way each and every essay. My only small complaint was that my real GRE essay questions were more open-ended than the Kaplan ones; and, more based on individual feelings and opinions (not fact-based) Wish Kaplan had given me some guidance on how to approach those kinds of essays. The Kaplan CAT test turned out to be easier than the real GRE. But, you know what?... scoring really well on the Kaplan test the night before the real one gave me all kinds of confidence. When the questions on the real test seemed to be really hard, I just supposed it was because I was doing really well. Face it, most of us will never have to use those words again in any kind of everyday conversation. And, outside of math and engineering disciplines, I'll never have to know the area of a triangle again! One other piece of advice --- if you know a 7th-grader in Pre-Algebra or Algebra, have them sit with you while taking some of the sample quantitative tests --- they can show you all the tricks(!)

GREAT IF YOU SELF IDENTIFY AS HOPELESS

I had no idea what to expect in the GRE. No clue what it would cover and how. This book was a saving grace. I got my B.S. four years ago and haven't taken math since freshman year in college, and even that wasn't beyond Algebra I. This book laid it out for me in terms designed for the basics. I had even less of a clue for the Vocab layout of the test. Even without knowing the actual definition of the words I was able to guess right 90% of the time with the skills taught in this book. From the diagnostic Test to the final out come I raised my score more than 200 points. I got the score I needed and will start the Masters in September. A math score of 580 isn't bad for someone who took no math beyond Algebra I and has always considered himself math stupid. Total score was well over 1000 for math and vocab combined. If you are lost a need a strong basic foundation to cover all and cover good, this is the book to get. The software was kinda cheesy but covers really good information. The drill stick with you and with the "test Center" area you can conpare and contrast how you are progressing and what you still need to work on. Going through the lessons 2-3 time you will have the GRE concept mastered and walk into the test stress free.

Best of three books I used

I recently took the GREs, and used the Kaplan, Barrons, and Princeton Reveiw books to study, as well as a math study aid. I found that the Kaplans CD Rom was the best study guide; not only did it have a diagnostic test, it also set up an entire study schedule that I had control over, as well as supplementary games and information about Grad School. The lessons were well-focused, gave practice questions to make sure you were following along, and moved quickly. I was able to determine quickly where my weaknesses were, and tackle those directly. The several practice tests, both on the CD and online, were really the critical element to my success. I took every practice test on the CD, online, and from the other books that were available. I got a great score, and I think it was primarily because Kaplan really pushes you to understand the mechanics of the test, then practice them over and over again. My general advice to those taking the tests: set aside the time to take at least 5 priactice tests on the computer. Make sure you have a book that emphasizes how the test works. Take a day (or two) off before the exam. The other books were fine; I felt that Kaplan really addressed the issues best. Highly recommended.

This book worked for me!

Try this book - it's totally worth it! It had the perfect amount of math review for someone like me who hasn't thought about doing a math problem in over 7 years. And I brushed up on my vocab and writing skills, too. Kaplan really helps you understand the mindset of the test-makers so you can beat them at their own game. After using this book my scores went from 560 math 580 verbal 600 analytical to 700 math 780 verbal and 700 analytical! I wanted to take a Kaplan course, but they are so expensive that I had to buy the book instead. I feel like I got the same amount of preparation AND I didn't have to shell out over $500.
