ANOTHER GEM FROM MURAKAMI

Kanpai #2 begins where the first volume left off, with Shintaro's father battling Miko, an exorcist from a clan of monster killers. As the battle unfolds in the classroom, Miko soon realizes the man is toying with her and even questions if she truly understands her clans goals and purposes for being exorcists. As the battle ends, Shintaro learns from his father that he can revitalize and heal himself by feeding off the life blood of humans, as he chooses Nao to be his `meal'. The class wakes to find all their memories of the battle have been erased...except for a few very special students: Kenken the werewolf, Yabe the quasi-ghost, Akiko the girl who can control a spirit wolf, and Nao. The four go in search of Shintaro and his father and soon meet Shintaro in the woods near his home. Nao soon discovers that not only did Shintaro drink her blood, but in doing so essentially made her his bride...and Nao is not happy about that at all!!! But that will all have to wait as the group find themselves under attack by another exorcist determined to kill Shintaro and his pet talking bunny familiar Ponta. Later, Shintaro and Ponta will find themselves capture by the schools dreaded Occult Investigation club and who will save them now? Kanpai is brought to us by Maki Murakami, who is also creator of the popular Gravitation series and no doubt her fans will see a few similarities in the two works. Kanpai offers a blend of fantasy, comedy, and romance and it mixes into one fun Manga. Murakami's art is fantastic and the characters are all well developed with their own personalities. Ponta is just hysterical. Reviewed by Tim Janson
