English summary: Can cannibalism, defined as the ritual consumption of human flesh by humans, be considered an anthropological constant? After all, this impression compels itself to our attention through the sheer number of sources concerned with the eating of humans from antiquity to nearly our own day. This book concerns itself with this question and offers for the first time an overview of the essential and fundamental discourse concerning cannibalism from ancient Mesopotamia through classical antiquity and into the early Middle Ages. This overview concludes with a critical engagement with early modern reports about cannibalistic acts of the Aztecs. The sources from Mesopotamia, Egypt and Asia Minor show that the discourse of cannibalism was first fully deployed with the Greeks and indeed both at the level of mythology as well as in relationship to their beliefs in the inferiority of foreign peoples. The use of cannibalistic motifs in the degradation of strangers of opponents in the same fashion was perpetuated through Roman antiquity and into the early modern period. In this sense, the collected articles in this book investigate not simply the actual practice of ritual, or even the gastronomically inclined practices, of cannibalism, but also the discourse of cannibalism in general as an anthropological constant. Schliesslich drangt sich dieser Eindruck bei der Vielzahl der Quellen zu Menschenfresserei von der Antike bis in unsere Tage beinahe auf. Dieser Band widmet sich der Frage und bietet erstmals einen Uberblick uber die wesentlichen und grundlegenden Kannibalismusdiskurse vom alten Mesopotamien uber die klassische Antike bis hin zum fruhen Mittelalter. Eine kritische Auseinandersetzung mit den fruhneuzeitlichen Berichten uber kannibalistische Akte der Azteken rundet den Uberblick ab. Die Quellen aus Mesopotamien, Agypten und aus Kleinasien zeigen, dass der Kannibalismusdiskurs erst mit den Griechen vehement einsetzt, und zwar sowohl auf der Ebene der Mythologie als auch im Hinblick auf eine Inferiorisierung fremder Volkerschaften. Die Nutzung des Kannibalismusmotivs zur Herabsetzung von Fremden oder Gegnern in den eigenen Reihen setzt sich uber das antike Rom bis in die Neuzeit fort. In diesem Sinne erweisen die in diesem Band versammelten Beitrage unter anderem zwar nicht die tatsachliche Praxis des rituell oder gar gastronomisch intendierten und praktizierten Kannibalismus, wohl aber den Kannibalismusdiskurs im Allgemeinen als anthropologische Konstante.
