Using words to include rather than exclude. Avoiding sexism, racism, classism, ageism, and nationalism in language. This description may be from another edition of this product.
This book is a handful of dynamite. It talks about language in a way I have never considered before. The author looks at the very roots of words and offers some ideas to make you think! Our language is so full of land mines, those subtle kinds of words that blow up unexpectedly, and it's full of common words we use every day but never think about. Until someone like this comes along and talks about it. Who ever thought to ask if "Black" really means "black" or "White" really means "white"? Look at your skin and decide exactly what color it is. And why does it matter anyway? The author puts out some ideas and gets you to thinking about things you never would have thought about otherwise. The best part is that this book reads very easy, and it is not preachy. I loved her grammar book. Now this author is looking at starting a wave of World Peace with words, one at a time. I'm betting she'll do it!
