The Lighter Side of Amish Life

I found this book quite enjoyable to read. The author, a life-long resident of Ohio, takes a humorous look at the life in and around his Amish community, giving the read a perspective that may at times not quite jibe with the perception that outsiders have of these people. The content is loosely structured around the cycle of life, beginning with birth and ending with death, and beneath the humour there is always a sense of the deeper meaning of Amish life. The only real down-side to the book is that it is rather short, being only 130 or so pages, some of which have illustrations. This book was, incidently, originally published as "Tales from the Peoli Road".

Review for Just Plain People: Tales and Truths of Amish Life

This book is a thoroughly enjoyable homespun tale of Amish life. I think it's based in fact, but some the author seems to like to embellish a little as well. We actually have a signed copy of this book, having gone to a little get-together at our local library to hear Mr. Beachy speak. Our book, however, had an unfortunate meeting with our toilet today, so we are going to buy another one. This is a book keeps you interested and if you're interested in real Amish life with laughs thrown in, this book is for you.
