Couldn't put it down!

What a great read! I'm not generally a fan of mysteries, but this compelling historical tale, full of wonderfully drawn characters and unexpected plot twists, had me hooked. From the moment the trial scene began, I was absolutely unable to put it down. I even skipped a family dinner so I could finish it! Highly, highly recommended.

A book for lawyers, history buffs, mystery fans, or people who just like good stories!

As a lawyer, a history major, and book addict, I found "Just Deceits" to be a very enjoyable and satisfying read. Whether you are looking for a work of historical fiction, a legal thriller, a murder mystery, or just a good story with good charaters and drama, this is the book for you. Reading "Just Deceits" I was hard pressed to believe that this was Mr. Schein's first novel. This book is a pleasure to read from beginning to end. The characters are full-bodied, interesting, and believable, and the story flows smoothly with no dead spots or places where you skim the page just to get to the next good part. The historical detail is wonderful and the story immediately captures and retains your interest. Lawyers will recognize and appreciate ideas and legal experiences, techniques, and philosophies that can still be found in courtrooms today. Mystery fans will be engaged by the who-done-it nature of this true story. History buffs will love it for the historical detail and the window into the formative years of the American legal system. If you buy one book to read this month, this should be that book.

Stayed up all night!

I stayed up all night to finish reading this book! I'm a History buff, so I loved all the historical details, but even my husband, who isn't a history buff at all, LOVED the book. The characters are really engrossing, and the courtroom drama is fantastic. Great read!

Great read!

Fast moving suspenseful legal page turner mixing accurate history with full blooded characters. Like the best historical fiction, "Deceits" reminds us that whatever else may have changed, difficult personal choices and their consequences are not much different now than they were 200 years ago. Trial lawyers or trial watchers will appreciate the interplay between the two superb lawyers defending the case that forms the central event of the book. Their contrasting theatrical and analytical approaches perfectly illustrate the roles of emotion and logic in persuading a jury to your client's point of view, and the lessons from that trial could equally apply to any high profile trial today.
