The Walking Man cometh

First Sentence: In the Nightside, that sour secret hidden heart of London, it's always three o'clock in the morning and the dawn never comes. Nightside has gone through changes in power and there is now a new group of Authorities. There is also a new threat. PI Jack Taylor is hired by Walker, Taylor's friend and enemy, to deal with this new threat. The Walking Man, God's own enforcer, has come to Nightside to destroy evil. Taylor has to find the answer to what will destroy the Walking Man. This book is definitely not for anyone who is squeamish. The violence is graphic and brutal. Yet the author's creative always amazes me and the story always draws me in. There is a slightly more series tone to this book with the question of man justifying their actions as being God's will. The book also takes on the topic of our obsession for looking young and brings it to horrific results. I was struck by the observation regarding weapons: "Every gun, every sword, maybe every bomb, too....These are simply instruments of death. Means to murder." Green's trademark humor is still in evidence with a car-eating tunnel. There is so development of the characters relationships, both between Taylor and Walker and, most significantly, between Taylor and Suzie Shooter. Taylor is a fascinating character in that he is a moral man living in an immoral environment yet considers himself one of the monsters. Suzie is highly damaged yet she loves John and is overcoming a barrier in her relationship to him. Green somewhat falls into the "guilty pleasure" category for me. I'm not quite certain as to why I like these books so much, but the underlying theme stays with me and I always look forward to the next book.

A Recommended Read....

John Taylor is about to face his toughest opponent in the Nightside.... The Nightside is the dark side of London, a hidden section where evil flourishes and the things that go bump in the night coexist with gods and legends. John Taylor is a P.I. with a talent for finding lost things. The Authorities oversee the Nightside; a new group has taken over, but now they want John's help. The Walking Man, the living embodiment of the wrath of God, has his sights set on the Authorities and John may be the only one standing in his way.... Simon R. Green never fails to entertain with his Nightside series and JUST ANOTHER JUDGEMENT DAY is a prime example why. Newcomers to the series could probably read JUST ANOTHER JUDGEMENT DAY as a stand alone but I wouldn't recommend it. In fact, Nightside is a series I highly recommend reading in order as we see some ongoing plotlines as well as character development. In particular, John's fear over who the Authorities are and his relationship with Shotgun Suzie may seem a bit odd if one hasn't read the prior books. Longtime fans of the series will appreciate that we are beginning to see some movement in the relationship between Shotgun Suzie and John, as the scenario was beginning to stagnate a bit. John Taylor is one of the most intriguing characters in fiction. While he resides in a world of darkness, John basically wants to do what is right. His confrontation with the Walking Man is perhaps his most philosophical ever. The Walking Man points out some of the atrocities of the Nightside, but is his vigilantism truly justified? The sidekick, Chandra, helps add a touch of lightness as well as balance to this very weighty story, as the entire concept of God's will as defined by any one man is thoroughly examined. JUST ANOTHER JUDGEMENT DAY is another spectacular offering from the very talented Simon R. Green. I can't rave enough about this series. Highly recommended for any fan of dark or urban fantasy! The best book of this series so far. It is like he LEVELED up in skill lately.

The nightside books are always entertaining. The mixture of action, humor and just an all around good story telling is worth reading.

The Best of the Series So Far

I found this series just after Simon wrote Hex and the City. I've read every book at least twice. The last book, the Unnatural Inquirer, was not his best, and I was worried the series was deteriorating. However, this book again showed the brilliance of Simon Green. It starts off, in typical fashion with an action sequence; then, we get to see Suzie (Oh God It's Her, Run) and John at home. Not exactly the Cleavers. This book develops the characters to a level we have not seen before. We learn why Walker takes such an interest in John. We learn what it takes to bring SS out of her shell (hint:its small, cuddley and needs help); we learn what really, really pisses John Taylor off, and we learn just what Gods wrath might be like. All in all, the best of the series to date.
