I am 8 years old and my Grandma read this with me on our Friday night sleepovers. Julie of the Wolves was very entertaining for me. I liked how it talked about wolves, they are my favorite animal. Julie of the Wolves is about a 13 year old Eskimo girl who ran away from home. She ran away from her husband and wanted to go to SanFrancisco. In the beginning of the book she watches a pack of wolves and names them. She watches how they talk to each other and learns to speak to them. They treat like a wolf pup and feed and protect her from danger. I liked the book alot, it helped me learn about wolves and the Eskimo life. It has good moments and sad moments, and I felt like I was there with Julie. Come read this book, you won't want it to end.

Julie of the Wolves was fantastic! It is one of my favourite books. I think this book should get not just the Newbery Medal but also all the medals in the world! It talks about an Eskimo girl who is known as Miyax to her people but known as Julie to a friend in San Francisco. Because she hates school, she decides to marry so she can escape school. Her husband is rotten to her and she escapes to the tundra. She gets lost and is accepted by a pack of wolves. In the end, Julie has to decide her lifestyle-to be Miyax of the Eskimos or be Julie of the Wolves.
This book was EXCELLENT!

If readers didn't care for this book, it's probably because they are too young to understand a lot of it, or they are too young to be patient enough to get to the end, or they have not learned to appreciate all that is in nature. But the ending is well worth the trip. This book was so good ? I can't even begin to explain it to you. Basically, this is about a young Eskimo girl who was taught by her grandfather to respect "the old ways," but the modern world is fast approaching, and Julie does not always like the changes she sees in her village and her father. Then her father leaves, placing her in a "foster family" type of situation, and it's not a good one... When something shocking almost happens, Julie makes a decision that changes her life. She decides to flee and go to her father, but in order to get there, Julie must make it over the wintry tundra, empty of everything but snow and ice and wolves. She shows such a respect for the animals that should be her enemies, and to survive the winter joins the pack. She learns a great deal about the world and herself, as she braves what few people can't even imagine in the face of trials. I honestly didn't like it toward the ending at first, and I cried - which broke the tension for my 5th graders, because they got to laugh as I cried. I was enjoying such a cool cry that one of my students had to finish the last chapter for me! THAT was pretty funny. And when I got to the end, I realized that sometimes when the world can't change for us, WE have to change for the world, and adapt. So I got along with the ending, after all. The book really gave us a view of the world as an "ecosystem," and the behavior of the wolves was very realistic and awesome. Each wolf had its own personality and played a role within the pack. Our whole class really enjoyed this - even the kids who hate to read!
