American billionaire hedge fund manager and philanthropist Julian Hart Robertson Jr was born on June 25, 1932 in and died on August 23, 2022. In 1980, Robertson established Tiger Management, one of the earliest hedge funds. His fund generated after-fee returns of 31.7% annually from its start in 1980 to its asset high in 1998, as opposed to the S&P 500's annual return of 12.7% over the same time period. The fund closed in March 2000 as a result of a subsequent significant fall. Only four out of Tiger's 21 years of existence saw losses.
