A Gloriously Polished String of Pearls

In a graduate course in literary criticism at UCLA 35 years ago, my professor stated that the "ultimate" critical comment, one which no one can dispute, is "I like it" or I don't like it." As to Janine Canan's JOURNEYS WITH JUSTINE I'm compelled to say: I LOVED IT! Ms. Canan has created a wondrous, imaginary garden in prose form, with Marianne Moore's "real toads" vibrantly singing on every page. The Journeys are a pure delight -- mystical, magical, metaphorical, metaphysical, philosophical, spiritual, inspirational, illuminating, whimsical, poignant, and so beautifully crafted -- like a gloriously polished string of pearls. I can only voice a loud "AMEN" to all the critical comments on the book's back cover and hope the Journeys will find the circulation and audience they deserve. After concluding the first reading, I immediately grabbed up the book the following day, eager to plunge in for a second exhilarating experience. Ms. Canan has brought her finely honed poetic skills to bear on these colorful tableaux. These adventures and, yes, escapades, see Justine through the depths of despondency only to emerge triumphant after discovering the fullest dimensions of love, the suffering and pain of life so beautifully tempered by the joys which are there if we have the courage to seek them.

Her Path to the Heart Takes Us All Home

I loved Janine Canan's Journeys with Justine. I've already sent copies to my daughters and close friends. It's a wonderful, witty, playfu, yet penetrating inner travel log of a brave young woman's spiritual journey and the people she meets who are the catalysts of her realizations. She also beautifully describes her inner processes each step of the way. I'm in love with Janine's poetry, but in Justine she takes the reader with her and offers her the actual Shakti filled experience she is having. As you read Justine you feel the divine touch of the scintillating Shakti yourself. I have just read Elizabeth Gilbert's best seller and wonderful Eat, Pray, Love, and was totally startled when I found such synchronicity in the journeys and lives of these two women writers who live a continent apart from each other.' Hurrah to both of them for offering us a glimpse of the breakthrough in consciousness that we experience when we read Rumi or Hafiz.
