Journalists' co-operative: A study of Jorgraf - Maceió, AL

In the state of Alagoas, with the bankruptcy of the newspaper Tribuna de Alagoas in 2007, members of the current Cooperative of Journalists and Graphics of Alagoas (Jorgraf) occupied the building where the newspaper used to operate and appropriated the industrial part after the former owners went two months without paying their employees' salaries. This book analyses the cooperative as an entrepreneurial alternative for organising journalism professionals. The research addresses the changes that have taken place in the way journalism is done, the reconfiguration of the labour market, the emergence of alternatives for maintaining jobs, and cooperativism as a business model. The book takes a look back at the history of Jorgraf and describes its dynamics through three dimensions of analysis: organisational, which refers to the body of cooperative members, their responsibilities and how they organise themselves administratively; financial, which refers to the financial support of the cooperative members and the cooperative; and productive, which describes the production practices and processes adopted by Jorgraf.
