In Vol. 1, Joseph Smith the Prophet flees the wrath of his own followers in the middle of a winter night. He rides to Far West, Missouri, which has become the city of refuge for Mormons who had been driven out of Zion by raging mobs. In Far West, the Prophet starts over again, but again the mobs attack. The governor signs an extermination order and the Saints are forced to leave the state. After escaping from Liberty Jail, the Prophet rejoins his people and founds the city of Nauvoo, on the banks of the Mississippi. Here, Smith begins to achieve his dreams. Nauvoo is a theocracy, and its elite citizens are practicing polygamy. Smith dominates Illinois politics, and becomes a candidate for the presidency of the United States. But hostile forces are plotting his destruction.
