John Adams said, "Children must be educated in the principles of freedom." This means all children.I have written this book to make it easier for you, or anyone who chooses, to build such a school. I have lived this work now for 11 years, with all the challenges that come with such a project. It has been a blessing, a joy and a lot of fruitful work. If you want to build an American classical leadership school for your neighborhood, this book will make it easier. I am passing on to you the benefit of my experience on this project, and I am including the major issues, needs, tasks, challenges, templates, choices and pieces that need to be addressed in order to succeed and thrive.When the idea for such a school came, I wasn't entirely surprised. I had been unwittingly preparing for it for years. I knew it mattered, and I know today that the same idea matters for a lot of other communities. If yours is one of them, this idea may be the most important thing you will think about in the days, weeks and months ahead. Ideas are powerful. Ideas are the seeds of real change and the catalysts of real progress. The result of applying these principles in a school setting has been a resounding success, measured in terms of a culture of virtue, learning and freedom.I want to get the experiences of an established charter school and how to create one into the minds, homes and communities of America, just as Thomas Paine's Common Sense, Thomas Jefferson's Declaration of Independence and Adam Smith's Wealth of Nations did with their work in 1776. Education is ripe for disruption and revolution. I believe education to be the largest civil/natural rights restraint and violation of our time.
