Hands down one of my favorite Sunfire books

Decidedly one of the best books in the Sunfire series. Joanna strikes out on her own to take a job in the textile industry. She learns independence, she seeks to continue her education, she is observant of the women around her at the mill, which provides an interesting insight into not just Joanna's life, but women of that time in general. As far as the romance goes, the "loser" guy is charming enough and kind of likeable (instead of being an obvious jerk, like in some of the books), but ultimately falls short, and it is nice to see Joanna reach this conclusion by being once again being observant and picking up on cues that this guy is not the one for the long haul.

Cool book!

Joanna has come to Lowell from her small New England village to work in a mill. But the mills are different from what she expected. The conditions are horrible. Will she stand with the other girls when they strike?
