Jimmy Carter: President and Peacemaker

Born in Plains, Georgia, in 1924, Jimmy Carter grew up on his parents' farm. He learned early on how to help out and work hard, two skills he would use throughout his life. He graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1946 and served in the navy for several years. After his father's death, he returned home to Georgia to run the family's peanut-farming business in 1953. He turned to politics in the 1960s and 1970s, serving as a state senator and later becoming governor of Georgia. A bit of a political unknown, Carter surprised many people when he won the 1976 presidential election. As president, he faced many challenges, such as a lackluster economy, a hostage crisis, and gasoline shortages. Carter, however, made great progress in bringing peace to the Middle East. He was instrumental in getting the nations of Israel and Egypt to sign a peace treaty in 1979. Since leaving office, Carter has remained active in world affairs, traveling to meet with foreign leaders and to monitor elections to ensure that they are fair. In 2002, he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his work. Book jacket.
