A Manifesto for Life-Affirming Christianity

As I write this, next weekend Harold Eberle will be speaking at my church. Of Harold's many books, we have decided to give a copy of this book to every member of our leadership team. (Harold's book "The Complete Wineskin" would also have been appropriate, and I highly recommend it.) I believe the American Church is at a crossroads (no pun intended). Many in leadership insist we focus on sin and depravity even though the born-again have been set free. Others will see the need to teach life, joy, and the power of the Holy Spirit as the new-birthright of every believer. I am in the second group, as is Harold Eberle. There is a bookmark included with this book, which has a summary of the book on it. Here is the text of that summary: "This book explains the differences between Death-Centered Christianity and Life-Giving Christianity. The most profound differences between these two views stems from the answer to this question: 'Did Jesus pay the penalty for our sins or did Jesus obtain forgiveness for our sins?' "In order to clarify this distinction, imagine you owe the bank $1 million, which is a debt you cannot pay. Also imagine you have a brother who goes to the bank and pays the debt on your behalf. Now imagine if the banker came to you after your brother paid the debt and told you, 'I forgive your debt.' If the banker said that, he would be lying to you. A debt cannot be paid and forgiven at the same time. Either is is one or the other--not both. "The God Who exhorts us to forgive seventy times seven is a forgiving God. He forgave our sins. "Jesus did not pay a penalty nor debt for our sins. That concept is nowhere in the Bible. The idea of paying a penalty for our sins was unheard of in Christianity until a Roman Catholic priest named Anselm (c. 1033-1109) introduced it to the Church in the 11th Century." "What the Bible teaches us is that Jesus established a Covenant through which our sins are forgiven. "Why is this important? A misunderstanding on this point changes our concept of God. The idea of Jesus paying a debt comes from the concept of God being ANGRY AT SIN, and He is just in the sense that He MUST punish all sin. Therefore, Jesus stood between us and a stern, exacting angry God--as a shield or a shock absorber--taking on the punishment that was due to us. "In contrast, the view which sees Jesus establishing a Covenant in which our sins are forgiven, reveals a God Who desires to forgive sins. God was working in Jesus, making a way for us to have our sins forgiven. His wrath continues to abide on those who reject Jesus (John 3:36), however, for those who do enter into His Covenant, His wrath has turned to mercy and grace. God forgives us. "Jesus is not a shield between us and an angry God. He is an open door, between us and a forgiving Father."

A strong argument for living beyond the cross which every Christian should consider. I think it would be an eye opener for many and I have certainly done a 180 since reading this book. I"m now looking forward to reading other books by this author.
