really good intro book for programming in java

If you're a newbie programmer and want to learn Java and object-oriented programming concepts, this book will get you started! Solid but fun.

Great book!

I have read several books trying to find one that would explain java in words that I could understand. I finally picked up this book and was amazed by the ease and clarity that it explained the information I had been so struggling to understand before. I would recommend this book to anyone who is having problems understanding the java language with no DOS experience! The author of the book Mr. Koosis is very kind and patient and very open to questions.

Excellent book for ambitious dummies

Java Programming for Dummies is probably one of the most ambitious books in the Dummies series. The book gives an excellent introduction to Java programming, mainly covering web applet programming. The writing style of the authors, Donald J. Koosis and David Koosis, perhaps isn't as funny as those of other Dummies-writers, but what they lack in the joke department is weighed up by nice and easy-to-read explanations of difficult subjects. They have concentrated most of the text on how to program web applets, a wise choice considering this is an introductury text on Java programming. Even though this is a book for the absolute beginner in Java programming, the subjects are so well and thoroughly explained that the book can be used as a reference later on! My only complaint is that the book's covers should specify that the reader should have at least some programming experience. I soon understood that without my sparse knowledge of Visual Basic, I wouldn't have understood the programming concepts as fast as I did. Perhaps this shows that Java programming isn't suitble for Dummies right away. But this book makes Java programming understandable for us dummies too!

Dummies jolt Programmers with a shot of caffeine

If you are an expert or immediate level programmer, this book on Java is right for you. From clearly outlined examples to concise chapters covering OOP, Object Oriented Programming, this book guides you from start to finish. In the usual "Dummies" style, the authors supply ample amounts of real world situations and comic relief to make a normally dry subject interesting. Included in the book is a CD with examples from the book and the Java Development Kit from Sun. The JDK is good, but documentation is basic and not for the novice programmer. The chapters start with the standard "Hello World" programming example and move on to all other aspects of the language. If you have never programmed in Java, this book is recommended. If you are a experienced Java programmer looking for a reference book, try something else.
