A Dinosaur's Review

This reviewer enjoyed the development of an application through an object oriented methodology using the latest HOT language. The development of a mortgage calculator with the Borland J-Builder development platform was a revelation in the difference between traditional development techniques and true object oriented, forgive the pun, methods. The author's style and wit made what I feared would be a boring experience a challenging and enjoyable one. The author takes us through a development process which normalizes the object orientation through several levels, clearly and with a solid understanding of the principles. As one who started life as a COBOL programmer, I would strongly recommend this book to anyone needing to learn JAVA and /or object oriented thinking.

This exciting new Java book presents a learning experience through practical examples. It begins with philosophy/history of programing/computing and ends with very heady Java programing.Combining the information with amusing lines throughout keep the reader interested. Including a Jbuilder trial version CD with the book allows the reader to experience Java by using a state of the art Java tool.Although this book is not a "Java for Dummies" edition, a person with some programming experience will be challanged by it and also enjoy it.
Production ready application development

This is a great book. It's a tutorial for learning not only Java, but also object-oriented software product design. A simple mortgage calculator application is developed and enhanced. Architectual sophistication is added at a pace that won't overwhelm the reader. Bit by bit the reader learns about java concepts: gui concepts, threads, java beans, jbdc, interfaces, applets, model-view viewer abstraction, etc. But, what makes this book for me are the design iterations that are interspersed. If you've done product development it rings true. The intial version of the mortgage calculator looks like a prototype. Then, there are additional requirements, the application becomes mutl-framed, there are a variety of validations to add. Then we have to repackage those validations so that they can be used if future deveolpment. Next, comes redesign of our application to make it more modular. Finally, there is another redesign and additional abstraction of data storage because the application has switched from file based to jdbc (for sql and a relational database interface).By the end of the book, the reader has been through a development cycle and is ready to deploy a production ready application.
One of the better

It is not only a good introduction to OOP and Java (and there are a lot of those), it's also a good book on learning JBuilder 3 (and there are very few of those). I have been working with JBuilder 3 for several months now, and was frustrated by the lack of good books using this tool. I found this book and have been very happy with it. The writing is good. The example that he creates is simple, but functional, and I feel I've learned more about the Jbuilder IDE.
