great reference tool for costume construction

I make costumes at times for a variety of uses. I do not have a degree in costume making, tho I am an accomplished seamstress. Sometimes a customer wants a costume that really needs construction techniques outside of the realm of sewing. That's when I turn to Jane Asher's book--again and again. It includes techniques that use a frame to put the costume over (such as the snow man); uses non-fabric materials (such as cardboard, or bubblewrap, etc.): and other clever constructions(such as the soda fountain or the statue on a pillar.) She uses sewing and non-sewing techniques (such as glueing, stapling, etc.) Costumes can be made as is, or anyone with some experience and imagination can change, re-size, alter to make something else. These are not your average Halloween costumes (tho they could be used for that.) They can certainly also be used for stage. I love this book!

Unusual costumes that will make you smile. Not your typical costumes - she has really put some thought into them, and her instructions are pretty good.

The Most Fun You'll Ever Have in a Costume!

You don't have to sew to love this book. You don't even have to ever make one of the many brilliant costumes described in this book to love it. Jane Asher's clever creative ideas and terrible, terrible puns, combined with wonderful celebrity photos are a delightful entertainment just to read. If you do chose to make one of her costumes, the instructions are well-written and easy to follow. She has tried, with mixed success, to translate some of the materials for the American audience. Included are several costumes which are visual puns and require almost no materials and no talent at all. However several of the fancier costumes are quite elaborate, so this book should please the sewer and non-sewer alike.
