JADE is a wonderful love story set in San Francisco in 1875. Jade Douglas has returned from living in Paris to settle the estate of her father who has been murdered. Jason Harrington has come to SF from New Mexico to settle the estate of his late father. Jade is in need of funds in order to retrieve her grandfathers collection of Chinese art and her friend Babs decides marrying a rich man (like Jason) would solve her problem. Due to Babs manipulations a small scandal erupts and Jason proposes to Jade after telling her he loves her. She agrees to marry him when she realizes she loves him as well. Then, due to a misunderstanding, their marriage gets off to a terrible start which leaves both of them frustrated and angry - but still very much in love (even if they don't admit it to each other). Mixed in with this are attempts on Jade's life and the search for her father's killers. This book made me smile and it also made me cry (more than once). Jade starts out feeling unloved and allows others to dictate her life. Due to his parents divorce, Jason has a rather dim view of marriage. Both of them grow as people and the ending is warm and predictable. The love scenes are sensual, the passion evident. I really enjoy Ms. Landis' writing and would also recommend her books - "Sunflower", "Rose" and "Come the Spring".
