The book arrived in a timely manner. The book was a gift so I haven't any idea about anything else.

Historical, yes, but truly hysterical...

Donald Jack has created a rare thing, indeed, with this series of books that show the true human condition - that humor (and alcohol, apparently) is what makes the most horrible situations bearable. With the grimmest backdrop of the original WWI set of books - no mean feat, given that the series begins in the trenches - Jack keeps you in hysterics regardless, touching on semi-suicidal parachutes, dabbling with the wives of staff officers, baroque dentistry, pigeons, and other seemingly ludicrous subjects with grace, aplomb, and almost ritual silliness. When you throw historical accuracy in the mix as a bonus, well, it's a practically irresistible package. Poignant, incisive and wonderfully belly-laugh inducing.

The best book I ever read.

I've read the entire Bandy series, and though they are all great, this is the best.A fabulous ride from the first sentence, you will laugh out loud and excuse yourself from any shared reading room often. The characters are wonderfully written and I swear that no-one does drunken dialogue better than Donald Jack. I'm guessing he has some experience with drunkeness. In an observational role, of course.Though an even more enjoyable read if you have an interest in vintage aviation or history, this books stands just fine on its own as a terrific work of humourous fiction.

Flashman fans will find this a delightful experience!!

The gent from Worksop has it right. This is a bit of a summation with the bitter sorrow of Kathryn's death a true disappointment to readers of the previous books in the series. Otherwise holds true to the high standard of ridiculous-ness established in the other books of the series. Historical fiction fans of everyone from George MacDonald Fraser's Flashman to Rowan Atkinson's Blackadder will find this series a Hoot!.

Another wonderful book from Donald Jack.

Bandy, sent home to Canada to boost the war effort disgraces himself with the aplomb of an innocent in town - but restores his honour with a successful campaign in Russia. Two things only spoilt this book for me. The sad death of Bandy's wife, Kathryn, and the feeling the author was 'tidying-up' in order to bring the series to a close, ending as it did with Bandy once more at home in the bosom of his family. The fact more books appeared in the series proved a great relief on the one hand, but an almost impossible task in tracing copies(within the U.K) on the other. Despite this these books represent the most enjoyable reading I have ever had.
