From gold rushes to urban renewal projects, It Happened in Denver includes twenty-five fascinating stories about events that shaped the Mile High City.
This is a fun quick-read without a lot of belaboring details. "It Happened in Denver" recounts the highlights of Denver history from the gold rush in 1859 up until the building of Coors Field in 1993 which influenced the rejuvenation of a run-down portion of lower downtown into the now popular up-scale Lo-Do. At the end of the book is a 5-page section on Denver Facts and Trivia: did you know that the cheeseburger was "invented" in Denver at The Humpty-Dumpty Barrel drive-in restaurant and patented in 1935? The only reason I didn't give this a 5-star rating, is that I was a little disappointed that there are no pictures other that the one on the cover. It would have been interesting to see pictures of the great blizzard in 1913 when Denver came to a stop after receiving 4 feet of snow or even pictures or some of the historical figures and buildings. Despite the lack of visuals, I enjoyed the book very much and am glad it's now part of my library.
Great fun!

This book was really fun to read. It's been a while since I've read something that had me as curious about my community as this book did. I can't walk down the streets of downtown Denver and NOT think of all that I learned about the flooding, the Hop Street Riot, and of course all the brothels and bars that must have been on nearly every corner back in the 1800's. Anyone interested in learning more about Denver, read this!
