Island Wise

Island people know the true gifts of a fulfilled life. This little book packs powerful insights into lives well spent. It is SO much more than a travel guide! I loved it, so I must be an island girl at heart.

Island Inspired Philosophy

The author lovingly describes 25 islands as varied as Nassau, Crete, Chincoteague, or Cuba. She summarizes the lifestyle and spirit that is unique to each. From that summary, she then highlights three key points that can be adopted into the reader's life. For example, for Key West she advises us to "Create your own style." and for an island in the Azores she says "Celebrate everything!" For each of these she gives examples of integrating the "lesson for living" into your life. I think photos of the islands would enhance the book for readers, but it is very plain with some grey shading and the lessons set off by simple stars.

Instant Escape

I bought this book while visiting Clearwater beach recently. I live in the Northeast and was escaping to Florida during another brutally cold winter. What I found in the book has enabled me to stay in the vacation frame of mind ever since. There are important lessons here-living simpler, on 'island time,' and staying in touch with your true self. You never have to set foot on any of the islands to learn how to live like an islander. These vivid descriptions will instantly warm you and transport you to places you didn't think still existed. Read one chapter each night before going to sleep- a perfect antidote to evening news!

Island Wise: A Review

Janis Frawley-Holler traveled to twenty-five islands throughout the world researching her latest book, Island Wise, Lessons in Living from the Islands of the World. Each island represents a specific lesson for living. Ms. Frawley-Holler's purpose is threefold. First she describes each island with a life's lesson; second, she explains how that lesson relates to our lives; and third, she provides simple (and inexpensive) suggestions of how to incorporate that lesson into our everyday lives. Ms. Frawley-Holler has a wonderful way with words; her descriptions are so vivid that you can visualize the colorful, tropical flowers of Taha'a (Tahiti), smell the spices and fresh ingredients of St. Lucia's "slow food", feel your hips move to the rhythms of Cuba, and yearn for the romance of Crete. I plan to include some of these wonderful and unique islands in my future travels! Island Wise is a fun, easy, andinspirational read, and I look forward to reading Volume II.

WONDERFUL!

Frawley-Holler really has a knack for really understanding each island she writes about. Not just on the surface, but what has actually shapes each particluar island; it's peoples, its culture, its history and way of life. A real inside look for anyone interested in the "real" island life. Each chapter, one fabluous island per chapter, tells what REALLY shapes the island lifestyle and how and why we, most of us living on the mainland in an over-saturated existance, cannot experience such timeless pleasures. However, at the end of each island chapter, Frawley-Holler gives very "wise" advice on how we can incorporate that island way of life into our everyday lives in very simple and accessible ways. As a visitor to many of the islands that she has included in her book and a true island-o-phile, I feel that Frawley-Holler's true undertanding of each island is very accurate. Her way of sharing the wisdom of the islands can help us to live the island way of life in our daily lives, even though we may not actually live on an island.
