Given to the Obama Children for St. Patrick's Day 2009

To celebrate St Patricks Day 2009, an Taoiseach (Prime Minister) Brian Cowen presented President Barack Obama with two books as a gift from Ireland, one for Michelle Obama and one for the Obama children, Malia and Sasha. The book chosen for the Obama children was Bairbre McCarthy's The Keeper of the Crock of Gold. Bairbre McCarthy's "The Keeper of the Crock of Gold" is an exhilarating read for all children aged below 12. The illustrations are simply stunning, flowing from page to page, bordering the text to create a true keepsake book. The stories cover the whole mythical range of the leprechaun, from traditional tales of their trickery and deceit, to some of Bairbre's own creations which feature a kinder, more generous leprechaun. For more than 20 years, County Clare native Bairbre has taught Irish Language, first at Adirondack Community College in Glens Falls, NY and currently at Skidmore College, in Saratoga Springs, NY. For the past twelve years, she has taught Irish language and storytelling at the Catskills Irish Arts Week, held each July in East Durham, NY. She is also the author of Favourite Irish Legends in Irish and English: A Dual Language Book The Keeper of the Crock of Gold is a beautifully presented and wonderfully written book which any young child will not only enjoy, but treasure for years.

A Wee Bit O' Fun

This was a great book, filled with ten different stories about the wonderful fairy shoemakers of Ireland known as leprechauns. Each story was enjoyable to read and told of what happens when one encounters a leprechaun. Will the encounter bring great wealth or will it bring an important lesson on life? I think Bairbre McCarthy did a great job with each of the fabulous stories. I now know more about leprechauns than ever before and I'm not even Irish! These stories, however, will put a wee bit o' the Emerald Isle in your heart. Highly recommended.
