"She left all to follow the gypsy rover."

This is a very unusual book about Ireland. It is a large coffee table sized book with over one hundred pictures and numerous quotes from Irish poets, writers and ballads.Up till now, I have described a ton of books that have been published on Ireland over the years, and the quality of the pictures improve continually.Getting great pictures from Ireland is not particularly difficult because Ireland is so picturesque that no matter where a camera is pointed ,a picture is just waiting. The unusual thing about this book is that it is not photographs, bit sketches of very common things and excellent portraits of people the artist met in Ireland. There are over 100 drawings,in both black and white and water colors. The drawings are excellent in every way and that was what got my attention when I picked up the book.It was published in 1980,and to my knowledge, not reissued since. The Forward was written by Princess Grace of Monaco. The quality of the printing, paper and overall construction is first class and was provided with a slip case. You may be thinking that the name Gordon Wetmore doesn't sound familiar as an Author. The reason for that is that he is an artist .He specializes in portraits and was the co-founder and Chairman of the Portrait Society of America, and has been commissioned to paint portraits of the famous such as,President Nixon,Jack Nicklaus,Dr.Norman Vincent Peale,Princess Grace and Prince Ranier, etc.He also collaborated with Leon Uris and produced "The Promised Land" about Israel. He has also worked with Walter Curley on "Vanishing Kingdoms" about The Irish Chiefs and their Families. I have been to Ireland three times and am amazed how well he has captured the friendliness and character of those he has painted. His sketches are also excellent portrayals of everyday life one encounters when travelling around that magical, enchanting and beautiful country. You may have to put forth a bit of effort to find this book, but if you have ever visited Ireland and enjoy excellent art,you should love it as much as I do.
