The book helps to furnish an appreciation of the Pentateuch as the Word of God and as a living tradition with a singular place in the sacred writings of Judaism and Christianity. The book also attempts to address some contemporary problems arising from Pentateuchal study. To this end, there is a general study of the historical and social background both of the patriarchal age and of the time of the formation of the Pentateuch. Particular emphasis is placed on the literary forms used, including the concept of Primeval History. This is accompanied throughout by an exegesis of representative passages. It is expected that this leads both to a familiarity with the present state of modern critical research and to a sensitivity to the spiritual and pastoral implications of the text.
