Soggin's Intro. is still helpful today.

I read this text book years ago while in graduate school. It struck me then as a very balanced approach to understanding the ancient people that both lived, then created our modern Hebrew Bible. Soggin was a very fine European (Italian) scholar in Old Testament studies, and all of his books, text book or otherwise, are valuable for understanding better the older Testament.
