Introduction to Programming With DirectX 8.0

The thing that the other reviewers didn't comprehend, is that this book is for beginners, notice the word "Introduction", this book isn't meant to be the book for learning all about DirectX 8.0, but it is meant to introduce you to DirectX and get you programming in it. After reading this the reader is ready for doing more advance DirectX programming. One thing for the newbie programmers, do not buy this book unless you have been programming in C++ for at least 6 months. And, you should be programming in OOP with C++ since that is the standard for DirectX programming.

Excellent book!!!!!!!!!

This was an excellent book! It is of great value for beginners who are just getting into the world of programming and also gaming. I am now in the process of learning c++ so the tools associated with the book are very nice. This gives you a great starting point on which you can build upon. Also, this book made me realize that creating a game demo is possible once you put forth some effort. I have read many worthless computer and technological books that are basically thrown away but this one will be around for a long time. In the world of computer gaming, you can't walk until you learn how to crawl! This teaches you how to crawl THE CORRECT way! Highly recommended!

Great for Begginers

I will make this brief: If you want to know the "New and Improved DirectX API, this is not for you; If you are a begginner like me and want the learn the basics of DirectX 8, this is a GREAT buy.

Chill out peps, this is a perfectly good book for beginners!

First of all, this book is not an advanced book! This book isfor those who would like to start DirectX programming! True, I boughtthis book hopeing it would explain the new features of DirectX 8.0.The book did not go there by no means and it upset me at first too. Then, I started reading the book. This book explains the basics ofDirectDraw really really well... I have been doing 2D games for awhile and I was shocked at all the stuff I learned. This book teachesyou how to write you own code from the ground up! This does not teachyou how to use the author's game engine. There is none and I believeit is best to know how to program from the ground up anyway. For allyou new to DirectX programming, this book is for you. You should befamiliar with MSVC++5.0-6.0 and the lang C++. For you that knowDirectX and are comfortable with it...This book probably will not bewhat your looking for unless you would like to refresh some skills. The only reason the book says With DirectX 8.0 is because that was outwhen the book was being written. The books whole idea is based onbeginner programmers who would like to move into the gaming industry!I really enjoy the book and think you would too. .... I have heardrumors that the author might be releasing a 3D book on DirectX 8.0sometime as soon as this summer ....

The Best Game Programming Book Ever

I picked up this book because I was eagerly interested in moving from OpenGL to Direct X. The instructions in the book were so easy to used that my father was able to program. The book is based around a game that the writer made and throughout the book it explains every part of it. If you want to learn Direct X or start programming, this book is an excelent choice.
