As a young Greek student, I learned the genitive absolute by rote as have generations of Greek learners. After some struggle I understood only how to identify and translate these challenging constructions so that they made sense in a sentence, but from the beginning I asked myself why did the authors choose to do this? Through the three and a half decades since of translating and teaching the Greek New Testament, I began to notice certain patterns in these genitive absolutes, and slowly the picture became clear enough to discuss with colleagues. With their encouragement I have put together this work, the culmination of decades of thinking and study.
