This multifaceted volume artfully blends the functions of an introduction and a commentary. Without overwhelming the student with details, it discusses a wide range of issues that are important for the interpretation of Isaiah. The book consists of three parts. In the first part, Herbert Wolf discusses the more traditional introductory questions: the world of Isaiah, the theories of multiple authorship, the structure of Isaiah, and Isaiah's poetry. The second part is a detailed paragraph-by-paragraph analysis of the prophecy itself. The last part of the book discusses Isaiah's christological and eschatological emphases. Detailed footnotes and an extensive bibliography facilitate further study.
Very well done. I found the information I needed to teach my class on Isaiah.
As advertised

This was just about what I was looking for...sort of explains Isaiah one chapter at a time. Overall I was pretty happy with this book. I think just a little more historical background to start would have been nice; but thats a minor point. I would recommend this book to someone (like me) with limited previous knowledge of Isaiah.
A fine single-volume work from a conservative perspective..

I recently re-read this work by Herbert M. Wolf. This is a solid work from the conservative perspective. The single authorship and premillennial ideas are adhered to stringently in this volume. Material here is presented very well in a logical and lucid manner. Chapters one through four give excellent background information pertaining to history and authorship of the book of Isaiah. I find it remarkable that the entire scope of Isaiah is presented so well in a SINGLE volume. I do have two quibbles. One, the book lacks detail on important aspects such as Christology and Authorship. Two, there are NO charts that summarize cogently important theological concepts derived from Isaiah. I recommend this book to anyone interested in delving deeper into the great book of Isaiah. Even if one does not hold or agree with the author's theology this is a book that deserves your attention. Well worth your time.
