Excellent Text - Poor Reproductions

This rather small format book is not for researching images. They are small for the most part and only useful as identification rather than study. There seems to be an absence of key colors not picked up in the printing process, and while the paper is coated, the effect seems to have been printed on newsprint. Full page details of paintings are not very helpful in deciphering the colors and applications except in the few earlier, more directly painted works or in the few graphic pieces such as posters. In all fairness one can not expect good reproductions at this low purchase price. Where one does get a bargain is in the very excellent and informative text; the book's title is right on the mark, written by someone who has a painter's eye and a historian's mind. A wonderful and rare combination of beautiful descriptions conveying the heart of the paintings ( even if the illustrations fail ) put into context of a place, time, and art world concerns important to the understanding of this unique talent. A great pleasure to read.
