Good multi-cultural view with great practice exercises

One of the few text books I didn't sell back. This book gives counseling students great examples on how to phrase difficult sessions. Difficult text to test on but very good for the comprehensive review of counseling a wide variety of clients.

A MUST for everyone! A great resource for therapist/counselors

I got this book as part of my counseling masters course (MFT) and I must say IT IS THE BOOK for therapist, business people or ANYONE who wants to improve how they communicate with others. My husband sometimes refers to it when he comes by friends who need help in the peoples skills (shy types). Even the most experienced communicator can learn new things! I was AMAZED by the examples, conceptualizations and just the wealth of information.

Everyone should know these skills!

This book should be required reading for everyone, regardless of field or relationship status. If you encounter a friend, relative, or stranger with something on their mind, this book shows you the steps you can take to help that person find the solutions to their own problems, a skill we all have within us. I use the skills in this book as a psychology student, a parent, and someone in long-term relationships with family, friends, and loved ones. If you can't afford the new copy, find an old one. This book will improve how you connect with others tremendously!

The difference between a bartender and a counselor!

This book is an excellent resource for the beginning counseling student; a wonderful introduction to the concept of the "intentional interview." This text will aid in mastering basic listening and influencing skills, as well as illustrate how to conduct a full interview using only listening skills. The authors break down the interviewing process into an easy to understand format, complete with case study illustrations. This book is not only a superb introduction to the intentional interview, it can also serve as a resource for those who are interested in honing their microskills. After all, this is what marks the difference between a bartender and a counselor!

Novice

For a Master's level clinical skills course I was required to read this text. While I initially thought it was more expensive than I wanted to pay for a textbook, I was pleasantly surpised that it was well worth the price. Not only did I learn skills, that I thought I had already mastered (a little cocky uh?) but I learned skills I didn't possess. I have since graduated and am working in the field, yet I still find it a useful resource and as a reminder not to get too cocky because one always can use REMINDERS about how to do something well!
