Insights into Academic Writing

This book appears nearly ideal for teachers of ESL students who have to learn how to write papers for core courses at American universities ASAP. The layout is pleasing. The organization is clear in design and wording. Students are exposed to authentic readings (1/2 page to four pp.) by famous thinkers/writers they will encounter in other classes. Critical thinking/discussion exercises point students toward the final paper for each unit. Separate rhetorical points are featured for the first and second drafts of each paper. The course is intended for a 16-week semester. There are 10 units drawn from various disciplines: Social Science, Anthropology, Philosophy, English Literature, Economics, Business, History, Law, Political Science, Technology. Unit 5 covers writing essay exams, while Units 8-10 are given over to writing a term paper. The topics and paper styles are as follows:1 Culture Shock [A Personal Narrative]2 Time and Space (Hall) (A Comparison)3 Moral Codes [Meng-Tzu, Aristotle, "The Golden Rule; Mill] (A Summary-Reaction)4 Analyzing Poetic Imagery [Dickinson] (A Critical Essay) 5 Scarcity and Choice (Writing an Essay Exam)6 What Makes Work Satisfying [Turkel, Naisbitt & Aburdene] (Expressing an Opinion)7 First Amendment Rights [case law] (An Argumentative Essay)8-10 The Impact of Technology on the Workplace (Term Paper) The concept of unity, introduced in the first unit, is augmented by focus on the thesis statement and topic sentences in unit 2, followed by paraphrasing and summarizing, and concrete supporting details in unit 3. In unit 4, supporting details are expanded to include direct and indirect quotations. Unit 6 emphasizes making generalizations and coherence. The rhetorical features presented in units 1-7 are reviewed and refined in the final three units, with new attention given to writing the introduction and conclusion and preparing a bibliography. The sole drawback to this text is that there are no grammar points or exercises. However, in all other respects, this appears to be just right for students who need 'core' writing skills immediately.
