Betty and Jim McCracken barely knew east from west when they first went to sea. This is their tale, a lighthearted story of two wonderfully warm and fallible people who ran aground in the Annisquam... This description may be from another edition of this product.

Too often every sailing book seems to pre-suppose that the reader has a firm grasp of the nautical world. James McCracken begins by explaining how the floor of his first boat was in fact, "the floor", and the place where food was made the "kitchen". It this type of honesty that makes this book so wonderful. I highly recommend it for anyone who wants to not only experience sailing through the eyes of a wonderful couple, but also someone who wants to keep their humility and youth.
A Book To Read Over and Over
Published by Thriftbooks.com User , 19 years ago
Several years ago, my aunt gave this book in the original hardcover version to my husband and me for Christmas. We had just purchased a small sailboat and did some cruising along the Maine coast with our children. Both my husband and I read the book and just really enjoyed it. We laughed. We identified with the McCrackens. We understood their love of the sea, their love for each of their boats and their love for each other. We loaned the book to several people who read it and enjoyed it as much as we had. Then the hardcover version seemed to disappear from our shelves. Who had we loaned it to and not returned it? We discovered that it had been reprinted in paperback and bought one immediately! We both re-read it and enjoyed it yet again. It is just a warm, well written, exciting, suspenseful, humorous, life story. I can't say enough good things about it.
Very funny. Launched me on a lifetime of sailing!

This book presents sailing and the cruising life in a very funny, warm, and genuine way. Partly because of this book I started sailing; this ultimately resulted in our owning a sailing business! So be careful if you read it. It just might sound too good.
