I still have my copy of "The Innocent Wayfaring" after 40 years, and I read it to my own children. A Medieval coming-of age story with charm and wit. It's a real treasure and delight; I can't believe no publisher has thought to reprint it.
Made a lasting impression

I read this in the 60s when I was a kid in Iowa. I'm not sure how I found it, but I was in the midst of Tolkien frenzy as well. I haven't read The Innocent Wayfaring now in 40 years, but I think about it at times (I remember that the illustrations were great) and I can still remember scenes and lines like it was yesterday (I think one is that the heroine says, "You could of course change the straw occasionally" followed by she "had no idea how much she sounded like her mother at that moment"). Wry but charming. It's a good coming-of-age story a little in the vein of the characters of Will Turner and Elizabeth Swann (of Pirates of the Caribbean). Highly recommended just like the other reviewer!
This book should be reissued

This is a charming story for readers 10 to 14. Set in the time of Chaucer and written by Marchete Chute (a biographer of Shakespeare), it follows the adventures of a young girl of noble family, and the young man she meets after running away from home. The medieval-esque line drawings (by the author, I think) that head each chapter are also delightful. What a shame that this is out of print!
