A romance book with a story!

I read this book while still in my teens. 'Innocent Pawn' isn't your typical M & B. It actually has a story to go well with the romance. The book opens with a 5 year old girl, Jo Ransome being kidnapped. This forces Hester, the girl's mother and a caterer by profession, to seek help from her rich ex-husband and Jo's father, John Ransome. As the story progresses into flashback, the author gives us a detailed account of the unpleasant circumstances in which the couple meet, marry and subsequently divorce. Although, Jo returns home unhurt, the traumatic experience disturbs the child's psyche and drives her to nightmares. In an effort to repair the damage caused by the kidnapping, John and Hester decide to marry once again. We then Hester slowly overcoming her reluctance to marry John once again and gradually falling in love with him. John's love for Hester is preety obvious in the book. My complaint with most romance books is that most authors potray their heroes as alpha males, who force women to accede to their wishes, blatantly disregard their wishes and show scant respect for their opinion. At no point after their first encounter do you see John forcing his will on Hester. Although, the act John does is reprehesible, however, knowing that he did it without purposefully intending to do so does help in mitigating the offence. Further everything he does post the act to redeem himself touches your heart. My most favourite scenes in the book are when John and Hester help their daughter recover from the nightmarish experience. This book holds a very special corner in my heart as this one of the earliest and best romance books I have ever read. I simply loved John even though one can never really condone what he does with Hester at their first encounter, yet the way the author builds his character, one can help but loving him in the end. I first read when I was still a teenager and have read it a number of times since then. If you do have a chance to grab hold of this book. Dont miss it. You may love it so much that you may find yourself reminiscing about it while writing a book review 10 years hence.
