Book Overview

NAMED A NEW YORK TIMES NOTABLE BOOK OF THE YEAR & ONE OF THE BEST FANTASY NOVELS OF THE YEAR

"Astonishing and pristine, the kind of debut I love to be devastated by, already so assured and sophisticated that it's difficult to imagine where the author can go from here. . . . It's simply a delight from start to finish." - AMAL EL-MOHTAR, New York Times Book Review

INK BLOOD SISTER SCRIBE by Emma Törzs I almost DNF’d this because of the slow character development and world building. Thankfully, the mystery, suspense and pacing sped up at about the halfway mark. The magic system was unique and nuanced. In this world, some people not affected by the magic in the books, can “hear” the magic. Some books are harmless, some are vampiric and will literally kill a person. Some people can read the text/spells aloud thus activating the magic (I.e. walking through walls, flying etc.). Then there are the rare “Scribes” who write the spells using their own blood as ink. Essentially this is a love letter to books, magic, found family and sisterhood. It also asks the question: who should be in charge of knowledge and who should be allowed access? Overall an enjoyable read, if you’re willing to trudge through the first half. Bonus points for Sir Kiwi the Pomeranian! Rating: 3.75/5 ⭐️
