This book was written when the author went to visit Cuba shortly after the revolution. Cardenal is a Nicaraguan poet and priest who spent time with and recorded the stories of students, workers, taxi drivers, sugar cane workers and other people he met during his stay. The stories have stuck with me for years. The hope, animation, education and commitment of the people he talks to are inspiring and beg the question of what would have happened in Cuba without the embargo and other international issues. The book also contains poetry from Cuban poets at that time. I have recommended it as an easily digestible read that helps you see what socialism looks like in "real life".
