Good and Evil

Norman and Amalie Petranker Salsitz, who survived the Holocaust in Poland, avoided capture by a series of miraculous escapes and disguises. They agreed to allow the author Amy Hill Hearth, an American writer of German-Christian descent, to record their memoirs in order to preserve the true history of World War II and Germany's cruelty to the Jewish population and others who were considered "undesirables." Published in 2001, this book is, in my opinion, a must read for young people especially. In view of the fact that human life is disposable today in many parts of the world, the reader will be left to ponder "why" and "what can we do to stop this insanity." The Holocaust survivors today are revealing their painful memories even as they have moved forward and established families in America and other parts of the world, so that murder of innocents may be stopped by compassionate leaders in the free world. I guarantee you will not put this book down until the end; it is that fascinating. Avoiding capture, certain death, using every means possible to survive, this Jewish couple who didn't even meet each other until near the end of the occupation in Poland, detail their lives in happier times and the shock of losing their families. They found a welcome in America after the war, and have led productive lives in New Jersey, tho never once forgetting their previous lives in "a world gone mad". Many Jewish survivors settled in south Jersey where I live. They were well regarded, contributed to the communities, and worked hard to educate their children. As the years pass their stories need more than ever to be told. I want to thank the author and the wonderful Salsitz couple for representing all the Holocaust survivors by revealing the truth.
