In a Land of Hatred

Veronica Stoltz was stuck. After two years of college, she still hadn't decided on a major. When it came to her future, she was completely lost. Really, it had been that way since her friend Tommy moved away suddenly. Things about that night still bothered her. The last thing Tommy said to her was strange, about whether she believed that goblins existed. Veronica would soon find the answer to Tommy's query. She was pulled into a grey land filled with goblins and flowers that threatened to eat her. Another surprise awaited her when she found out that Tommy and his family hadn't moved away, they had been abducted and taken to another dimension. In a Land of Hatred is the first in this series about the land of Hatred Blooms. It's a nice solid story with interesting characters. I particularly like that the goblins are portrayed with more depth than in most fantasy novels. I can't wait to get started on the next book.

Compelling fantasy novel

I've sometimes found it difficult to find fresh and unique fantasy novels, but "In a Land of Hatred" is a breath of fresh air and a page-turner. You'll quickly find yourself immersed in the dreary land of Hatred Blooms and its fascinating inhabitants who often aren't as the first appear. Both the main characters and the various creatures of Hatred Blooms are vibrant and feel very real. This novel explores the timeless theme of a young woman learning to appreciate all the little joys and comforts of her life after she is forced to live in a brutal and harsh land. I think there is a bit of Veronica in all of us who tend to dwell on the negative aspects of our lives and forget about the beauty that's all around us. "In a Land of Hatred" is a great and imaginative story, but it's also a good reminder that we shouldn't take anything in our lives for granted. It's rare to find a novel that's an enjoyable read with a worthwhile message that simply unfolds throughout the story without coming across as preachy.

Refreshing fantasy

In her premiere self-published work, In a Land of Hatred, the author breathes life into two-dimensional stock characters of folklore and fairytales. Her journalistic, straightforward style is a refreshing departure from the overly flowery language that is often a trapping of many fantasy novels. This approach makes a fanciful realm come to life in a realistic manner that draws in the reader. In a Land of Hatred would appeal to fans of the fantasy genre, especially teens and young adults. This book would also be a good recommendation for those who enjoyed Stephanie Meyer's Twilight series.

A Story All Can Appreciate

In a Land of Hatred is a story that will draw you in, no matter who you are. It takes the reader from escaping their own reality to appreciating their reality. Soltis keeps very good pace with concise, page- turning chapters which makes it an easy read for the busy schedules of today. The author breaths life into these folklore characters in a slow but steady fashion so as to allow the characters to grow on you as you are reading. The characters will stay with you long after you put the book down. Even if you're not sold on the goblins and man-eating trees, you will end up loving this book.
