Very good romance

I was impressed with this novel -- enough to keep me reading all night! It's true, the abuse the heroine suffered was very hard to take. But, it had to be portrayed as quite severe, because otherwise, why would Angela have been so reluctant to have sexual relations with her new husband, even four years after her last marriage ended? I thought her continued trauma was very realistically portrayed. I also thought Cameron displayed more understanding (and imagination) than most "heroes" would, in these circumstances. All around, I thought the author did a great job with the characterizations of Angela, Cam, and their household. I loved the old-lovers-reunited theme, and the fact that Cam's "revenge" very quickly became love, ( & I loved the fact that he never really fell out of love with her, nor she with him, despite their years of separation) and how the story quickly became about Cam's helping Angela out of being trapped by her past. And Angela wasn't just some "rescue poor me" heroine either -- I really liked her strength. The love scenes are very sensual and the fact that there was a lady taking charge, was quite a change from the usual romance-novel-variety love scenes! On the not-so-great side, however, the mystery of Cam's parentage was slow-moving and lessened my interest in the story. And the mystery of who was trying to kill him became pretty obvious. In fact the first person I thought of was indeed the person who was behind the attempts. My good first impression with these characters was weakened because they weren't quick enough to grasp who the person was. Also, I didn't think the secondary romance between Angela's maid, Kate, and Cam's male secretary added anything to the book. But still I must give this book a strong recommendation. The love story between Cam and Angela was incredibly readable. I kept thinking, "just a little more", and then it was 2 AM! It's been ages since a novel did that to me.

Good, but be warned

This was a good story overall, but there was a particularly disturbing description of the heroine's sexual abuse by her former husband. I think the story could have been told just as well without it. The conflicting viewpoints about the past of the hero and heroine made for a very good read, as well as the creative way in which he helped her overcome her understandable fear of intimacy.

Wonderful!

This is my first book by Ms. Camp and I was pleasantly surprised by it. Angela's artless innocence and love is challenged when she is torn from her one true love. Cameron has great determination and ambition--with a secret parentage. When Dunstan conspires with her family to rip them apart, their struggle against class prejudice is all the more poignant. I'd also like to recommend Elizabeth Thornton, Joan Johnston, Julia Quinn, Julia London.

A wonderful read from cover to cover!

This is one of the best romance novels I have read in a long time. Both Cam and Angela are well-fleshed out, completely lovable characters. Even when Cam is a ruthless revenge-seeker, you see through his rotten acts and understand the reasons behind them. Then finally, when he selflessly tortures himself to help Angela get past her sexual abuse, he shot right to the top of my list of all-time best fiction heroes. If you want a book to get lost in, this is it. Both this novel, and "Suddenly," by Ms. Camp, were wonderful and highly recommended.

I Really enjoyed this book, it is one of her best!

I have read all of Candace Camps books and I have to say that this is the best I have read of hers, I hope her next book is just as great. If you enjoy reading romance books as I do than you will love Candace Camp she is a definite read!!
