WOW! A "must have" for your professional library...

I purchased this after seeing the companion book "Improving Writing: K-8" and I'm glad I did! What a treasure chest of suggestions, ideas, reproducibles and other resources to use! The CD is great, so you don't have to bring the entire huge book (603pp) to school. What is truly great about the book is that it is organized in a prescriptive manner (i.e. Is this the reading behavior observed? ... Try this activity...). If you only purchase one resource for yourself to support the readers in your classroom, then this ought to be the one! Good for emergent readers all the way thru to struggling middle/high schoolers!

Improving Reading: Strategies And Resources (Paperback)

This book was highly recommended by my graduate professor a few years ago, and it has become my most used reference. I wouldn't be without it. Johns and Lenski have compiled a comprehensive collection of interventions specific to each need. The layout is clean and easy to reference quickly for busy teachers. The strategies are based on sound research and experience. As a reading specialist, its a requirement, but every elementary teacher would benefit from its wealth of information.
A must have reading resourse for every teacher!

This book should be in every teacher's collection. I teach English as a Second Language and I use this book often. It gives great ideas for strategies to use with struggling readers. I purchased this book in grad school for my reading specialist certification and now, I find it to be one of the resources that I refer to most. We all have students in our classes that struggle with reading for one reason or another; and generally they have problems with different aspects of the reading process. This book starts with the basics of letter identification, continues through fluency and comprenhension, and even gives strategies for getting students to enjoy reading. Look at the table of contents for this book -- you will see for yourself! I recommend this resource for ALL K-12 teachers. In addition to the hundreds -- yes hundreds-- of activities, there are also numerous lists and resources listed in the back of the book. I feel that if you purchase this book -- YOU WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED!
