Book Overview

How-dee! My name's Big Blue Bill, and I'm a truck. I've got 18 big wheels turning, 600 horses under the hood, and 53 feet o' trailer hangin' on behind . . . So begins a book that introduces all types of trucks (with names such as Bony Tony and Leif the Logging Truck), narrated by a good ol' boy semi-truck! Lively text and bold, colorful artwork of hip, anthropomorphic trucks will transport young readers down highways, into a truck stop, and onto a...

Yee-haw

My son has loved this book since he was a year old, and at 4 it hasn't lost its appeal. I agree with the other reviewer, it is best read with a southern accent. If you like to "get into" reading with your child and put on voices and accents, you will LOVE this book!

Read it like a '70's CB-er

You MUST read this in a vaguely-southern, "Ten-4 good buddy" dialect to give the full effect. To get the accent, listen to C.W. McCall's "Convoy" from the early 70's. My grandson demands that I read it about 3 times a day, and his parents now run from the room. Heck, sometimes even I want to run from the room.

De Twuck Book

That's what our my almost-three-year-old calls this book. We bought it because it was cheap and had cool illustrations. He fell in love with the book immediately because it has cool illustrations of trucks (and cars). He loves to give his own names to all the cars and trucks that aren't given names in the text. I love the illustrations--very "mod", with lots of interesting details. The style is sort of a modern take on a '50s/'60s thing, using simplified geometric shapes (people's heads are always perfect circles), and perspectives that are either exaggerated or flattened (or both at once). Staake has a distinctive style--as distinctive and interesting as Alison Jay.

Boy, does my son love this!

My three-year-old has practically memorized this book after just a few days. The language is textured and fun, and the text has some educational qualities to it. The illustrations are quirky and multi-dimensional, with lots going on in most of the pictures, enough to keep both the young and old occupied. If your kid is into trucks or vehicles, they'll love this book. Disclosure: the artist, Bob Staake, is a friend of mine, and I've always admired his work. But this is a great team-up of art and text that deserves recognition.
