this series teaches children how to read independently

I just wanted to comment on some of the negative reviews. The books in "My FIrst Reader" series are meant to teach children how to read independently. Inside each book there is a note to parents that states, "Once a reader can recognize and identify the 20 words used to tell this story, he or she will be able to read successfully the entire book. These 20 words are repeated throughout the story, so that young readers will be able to easily recognize the words and understand their meaning." That statement is followed by the 20 high-frequency words found in the story. The text is limited to about one sentence per page and relies on repition and picture clues to help beginning readers decode and comprehend the text. These books are not really meant for read alouds and if you purchase them for such, you are sure to be disappointed. Stick to Eric Carle, Eve Bunting, Leo Lionni, and Kevin Henkes, etc. if your looking for great picture books to read aloud to young children. As a elementary and special education teacher, I love to use this series along with Viking, and Compass Point with my emerging readers. My daughter just began Guided Reading(Fountas and Pinnell)in Kindergarten and now that I feel she is developmentally ready to read, I've begun working with her at home. I purchased quite a few books from the above mentioned readers, and after playing some high-frequency word games, taking a picture walk to discuss what we think the story might be about, along with finger pointing and echo reading, my daughter is reading these stories independently....after just one evening of focusing on each book! She is very proud to read to adults and enjoys reading to her younger cousins, not to mention "her class" of stuffed animals and dollies. If you are looking for early readers to build confidence and self-esteem in your emerging reader, then I highly recommend this series.

My favorite book

This book is very good. I like her clothes, I like her clown, I like her nail polish and I like her jewelry. My favorite part is when she says "no one tells me what to wear".
