Start the fires of discovery....

This is a great book for young children to start thinking about the interaction of their world. Not just about the dry fossils and bones they find in a museum. But how did the animals live, eat, move, and get along with others. Let them see the dinosaurs and other animals are breathing, roaring living animals. And if the science is off, then explain to the kids how science and our knowledge of the world is always changing, as alive as the world we live in. Let them find other books, or websites, or watch the PBS channels and learn that some books and some science becomes outdated. Show them that the world changes, sometimes for the better, sometimes not. Isn't that what the BOOK is about? Some of the animals in the book would have had a BAD time in the modern world. Isn't that the lesson?

Amazing and Astonishing

My six-year old girl LOVES dinosaurs, so we got her this book for Christmas this year (2007). She loves this book and so do I! The graphics are incredible and make you think that the Orca is really about to get eaten! Then there is the brachiosaurus tromping through the herd of elephants at the waterhole. Page after page the dinos are put with their modern-day equivalents, and a sidebar tells you more about the dino and displays them on a size scale. Who knew the Liopleurodon was bigger than a sperm whale (and 100+ tons)??
