A Love Song to Fifties Brooklyn

This book is a love song to 1950's Brooklyn, and having shared this "growing up" experience with the author, I can say without equivocation that he has nailed it. Either Jack Bilello has total recall or he is a most meticulous researcher. The book was like traveling back in time to Rockaway Avenue and Fulton Street in Brooklyn, and re-living the experiences of my youth. The book is also a touching tribute to the author's family, tinged with the sad regrets that many of us feel about taking our parents for granted and not fully understanding their worth until it was too late to express our admiration. I highly recommend this book to anyone who grew up in Brooklyn or during the 1950s...it's a home run!

A touching tribute to days gone by

Here is a wonderful read for those who enjoy books with pathos and heart. The author does an excellent job of recreating a childhood in Brooklyn spent playing baseball and learning life lessons from those around him, particularly his father. Each chapter carries the reader away to a simpler time, seen through the eyes of a young, likable narrator. Jack Bilello's writing is lovely and descriptive, the unique cast of characters facinates throughout, and the book moves along at a brisk pace. This is good, old-fashioned story-telling, the kind that is sorely lacking today. I heartily recommend this fine book.
